Downtown Reno Revisited....

All I can say about fishing the Truckee River downtown is "Amazing!" Why have I stayed away so long. Well, it is not pretty, lots of strange people hanging around. The people who fish this area regularly call it "Bum Alley." In spite of this I have never hooked and landed so many fat rainbows on this river. I am also amazed at how few people fish this river in Reno. If they only knew! Here are a few photos of our recent success. Wishing you all fantastic fall fishing!

Truckee River Downtown Reno

I have heard so much about how good the fishing is in Downtown Reno, I decided to finally brave the dirt and grime to check it out. Hooked-up with Jan Nemec and Gary R. @ 6:00 AM! Jan immediately hooked and landed a planter. We had so many fish on it was crazy! Couldn't find any of the larger fish that are lurking in this area. Finally Gary got the "fatty" @ around 10:00 AM. I managed a larger fish just after 11:00 AM, when it was time to call it a day. Go check out the downtown area!

Lower Truckee

Fished the lower Truckee today for a couple of hours with my buddy Gary. It was hot, but the water was beautiful. We do not normally fish the lower river this time of year because the water temps can get to high to safely play and land fish. Gary hooked a small fish on an HBI nymph. and I managed to get a larger 12" rainbow in the newly restored run above the bridge. Check out the picture of the fry. When these guy's grow-up they will be fun to fool! The Truckee is amazing!

Flowers along the West Carson

There were some very beautiful flowers in bloom along the banks of the West Carson River along Highway 88. Enjoy!

Baja Roosterfish Video

Thought you might enjoy this video of my buddy Larry fighting and landing a Rooster on our Baja Trip from May. The quality is not great and it was very windy that day, but I think you will still find it entertaining. If you haven't done this you have to go! It's so much fun! Click on the link at the bottom of this page for The Reel Baja Guide Service. Jeff can set you up for a fabulous trip. Hope you enjoy!

East and West Carson River

Fished the East and West Carson rivers last week with one of my fishing buddies Gary. This is the first time we had fished the East Carson. Beautiful scenery and very fishy water, which was still a bit high but fishable. Tough to cross though. Gary managed to land a few small rainbows on dries. I had no luck. We switched to the West Carson's pocket water and more success on olive and yellow simulators. Most fish were small but it was fun to see this little fish smash these large dries.

3 Days in Baja!

I recently traveled to the East Cape in Baja for an awesome saltwater trip. I went with a buddy of mine Larry. We spent 3 days fishing for Roosters and Jack Crevelle in 23' pangas inshore. Larry being the more experienced saltwater fly angler did very well hooking and landing several nice Roosters. I managed to hook several but only landed 1 fish. But, I am hooked on this saltwater stuff. The fish strike hard, run far and put up a strong fight. We stayed at an awesome resort called Rancho Leonero. This place had great food, rooms and of course fishing. Our guide was Jeff deBrown from the Reel Baja. Jeff was very knowledgeable and worked very hard to get us hooked-up. Not many people traveling to Mexico with the Flu scare. Ironically, there are no cases of the flu in Baja! If you have ever wanted to try saltwater fly-fishing this is a great place to start. I am planning a future trip now if anybody is interested, please contact me.

A Morning on the Truckee

Got out yesterday at 6:30 AM to fish the Truckee @ Mayberry Park with a friend in town from Arizona. A beautiful day on the river, no other anglers most of the day! The higher flows must have scared most of the players away. Rigged up the 9 foot 5 weight with a double nymph rig of a golden stone and a baetis dropper. Started to drift my flies in my favorite run and after a few drifts hooked into one of the larger size 20" wild rainbows that inhabit the river. He jumped and threw the fly. That would be the story all day. Could not keep any fish on the fly, but hooked quite a few. Saw these bachelor ducks moving downstream as well. All in all it was a nice day on the river and my friend enjoyed fishing the experience.
